What to Expect When Visiting Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India

Itinerary

Stop At: Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, Bhadra Rd Opposite Electricity House, Gheekanta, Lal Darwaja, Ahmedabad 380001 India

You will be picked up from your hotel in Ahmedabad’s city center.  Your local English Speaking guide will begin the tour at 8:00 AM. The first stop on the tour will be the Jama Masjid of Ahmedabad (Friday Mosque).  It was built in 1423 during the reign of Ahmedabad’s founder Ahmed Shah I. While all around the mosque lies the hectic frenzy of the old city-center, step through the gates and the urban chaos falls away, leaving you standing in a refuge of profound serenity.

Next, you will visit Sidi Saiyed Mosque.  It was built in 1573 by Sidi Saiyyed, an Abyssinian in the entourage of Bilal Jhajar Khan, a General in the armed forces of the last Sultan. The mosque’s famous “Tree of Life Jali” or lattice work done on the semicircular arch windows has come to symbolize the grandeur of the city.  From here, you will visit the Hathee Singh Jain Temple.

Stop At: Sabarmati Ashram / Mahatma Gandhi’s Home, Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya, Ahmedabad 380027 India

Continue to explore the Sabarmati Ashram (also known as the Gandhi Ashram), which is situated in a suburb of Ahmedabad on the banks of the River Sabarmati. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, (known as Mahatma Gandhi), lived here for close to twelve years.

You will have time for a lunch at a local restaurant. (Under Own Expenses).

Stop At: Adalaj Step-well, Adalaj District-Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad India

After lunch, continue to the Adalaj Stepwell to see a Hindu water storage in the town of Adalaj. The 5-story Stepwell was built in 1499 by the Muslim ruler Mohammed Begda. The stepwells were once necessary to the semiarid districts of Gujarat as they provided essential water for drinking, washing and bathing. These wells were also settings for celebrations and holy ceremonies.

Stop At: Swaminarayan Akshardham, Indian Cultural Complex Sector 20, J Road, Gandhinagar India

Your tour continues to Akshardham Temple, a Swaminarayan sanctuary complex. This Hindu temple complex took 13 years to build and is a tribute to Lord Swaminarayan and his teachings.  

Your tour concludes with you being driven back to your hotel in central Ahmedabad.
