What to Expect When Visiting Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India
Join a local in Chennai for a 5-hour full culinary experience that includes a market visit, South Indian cooking lesson, and authentic in-home meal. Experience a cozy setting in this local home as you hear about South Indian life over Tamilian, vegetarian cuisine with your host. Leave with new recipes, a new friend, and lifelong memories.
This is a unique opportunity to visit the home of a local and explore traditional culture and cuisine. Enjoy a South Indian coffee at your host’s home before driving together to the local market. Explore the vegetable and flower vendor stalls and learn about the varieties of regional produce sold at this street market that locals shop at. Next join Jyashree in her kitchen where she will teach you to prepare vegetable poriyal (sautéed vegetables with spices), flavored rice, and rasam (a peppery broth eaten with rice and ghee), the essentials of a South Indian Iyer sapaad (meal). You can expect the cooking lesson to last about 1-2 hours. Enjoy a traditional South Indian Iyer sapaad, a vegetarian Tamil Brahmin spread that you helped prepare along with other dishes prepared in advance. Enjoy a wide variety of dishes all prepared with fresh, seasonal ingredients and served on a banana leaf. Your meal will be accompanied by rice and handmade dosas (crispy South Indian crepes). Sample homemade pickles and chutneys, which vary based on the seasons, such as tender mango pickle or her green tomato, chili and garlic chutney. End your meal with a sweet dessert and memories to last a lifetime.
