Jaisalmer is a former medieval trading center and a princely state in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, in the heart of the Thar Desert. Known as the “Golden City,” it’s distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture. Dominating the skyline is Jaisalmer Fort, a sprawling hilltop citadel buttressed by 99 bastions. Behind its massive walls stand the ornate Maharaja’s Palace and intricately carved Jain temples.
Your guided day tour starts with the visit of Jaisalmer fort which is located in the center of the city. It is also known as ‘Sonar Kila’ or ‘Golden Fort’ because this yellow sandstone fort sparkles like gold at sunset. This fort was built in 1156 AD on the top of Trikura Hill by a Bhatti Rajput ruler Jaisal and is still a living fort. It encompasses beautiful havelis, famous jain temples and the residences of soldiers and traders. The worth visit jain temples are five in numbers adorned with magnificent of Hindu deities like Shiva Parvati, Ganesha etc. The temples are erected out of sand stone, marble and habur stone. The rich carving work on the pillars and ceiling of each temple is stunning.
Later you proceed to visit the Patwon Ki Haveli- which is situated near the Patwa campus. There are five havelis in a series in this whole complex, which were built by Guman Chand Patwa in 1805 for his five sons. These havelies took 50 years to build and the painting work is eye catching.
Another important Haveli which you visit with your tour guide is Nathmal Ki Haveli – it is located at the walking distance from Patwon Ki Haveli. It is based on the blend of Rajput and Mughal design. This Haveli was built by Maharajal Barisal as a residence of Diwan Mohata Nathal and is decorated with the paintings of birds, elephants, flowers, bicycles; steam engines and soldiers were made.
After the visit of these famous Havelies you will taken to a local India restaurant for lunch. After relishing the Rajasthani dishes you proceed for the experience of camel safari in Sam Sand Dunes. Sam is located at a distance of 40 KM from Jaisalmer. On the way to Sam you can stop at the haunted city of Kuldhara which used to fall on the medieval silk route. The legends say that this village was deserted by the Pariwal clan by the tyranny of Commander Salim Singh and since then this place is cursed. Later proceed to the camel safari point at Sam. Riding a camel in the open desert area would be an adventure for you and would remind you of the hardships of the sellers of the carvans. After finishing the safari you will be dropped back to your hotel in Jaisalmer.
