Thiksay monastery is a gompa of Tibetan Buddhism religion. It is located on the top of the hill. It is very famous for its similarity with Potala Palace of Lhasa. This monastery is famous for pilgrim activities, architectural elements, sightseeing and exploration. The monastery has an interesting anecdote of how it was built in this exact location.
Later, drive to Hemis Monastery is the most popular monastery and tourist attraction in Ladakh. Hemis is tucked on a mountain on the west bank of the serene River Indus. And it is is renowned for its annual Hemis Festival, which celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Rinpoche.
The monastery belongs to Dugpa Kargyutpa order or Red Sect of Buddhism and is said to be enriched with a large number of Thangkas or paintings, which are exhibited during the Hemis Festival.
