Arikamedu: Roman Emporia Poduca

Puducherry Trip Overview

Travelers visiting Pondicherry will find Arikamedu mentioned in a lot of tourist brochures, as it should be, but sadly enough there is very little information to be had. And a visit to the site itself reveals nothing of the historical significance and the archaeological bounty that lies buried in layers of soil beneath the crumbling ruins of the French Mission House.
Indeed, it is quite futile to go to Arikamedu unless you accompanied by someone who has knowledge of its past – stretching back to 2nd century BCE, and beyond! At the site, there is no information board, or a person to explain the history of the place.

Itinerary

Stop At: Arikamedu Archaeological Site, Arikamedu Rd, Veerampattinam 605007 India

A 45 minutes’ drive to the south of Pondicherry, lies the village of Veerampattinam. On this fragmented piece of land overlooking the Bay of Bengal on one side and separated from the mainland by a narrow channel that’s part of a network of backwaters, is a mound called Arikamedu. Buried layer upon layer, the legacy of centuries of human settlements are chronicled in the very stones and artifacts that’s left behind.
Century by century, I will describe to you the human settlements that took place and what they did for a living: of the cosmopolitan nature of the community that once happened to live here, and how they established the ancient trade routes during the heydays of the Roman Empire.
